In 1937, the establishment of the first hospital in George Town was a landmark event in the healthcare history of the Cayman Islands. This hospital was partially funded by a significant donation of £383 from Helen Lambert, whose contribution was instrumental in making the facility a reality.
Before the construction of the hospital, the Cayman Islands had no permanent doctor, which meant that the community heavily relied on alternative forms of medical care. A local 'dispenser', who acted as a pharmacist, provided basic medical supplies and treatments. Additionally, the community turned to folk ('bush') medicine, a practice deeply rooted in traditional knowledge of local plants and remedies.
Local women also played a crucial role in healthcare, serving as midwives and nurses. These women were essential in delivering babies, tending to the sick, and providing general care in a time when formal medical services were limited or nonexistent.
The establishment of the hospital marked the beginning of more structured and formal healthcare in the Cayman Islands, moving from these community-based practices to more modern medical services.
